As with many aspects of motorcycling overtaking another vehicle can be very dangerous
and is one of the main causes of motorcycle crashes and serious injury here in the UK.
No matter how experienced you are – it still hurts – A LOT!
However all is not lost – it is possible to reduce if not eliminate the dangers involved it this
manoeuvre with some practice and guidance.
As part of our offer of Advanced Training, South Warwickshire Advanced Riders run a number
of skills workshops specifically aimed at alleviating many of the dangers associated with
Overtaking.
Safe overtaking requires careful planning to take into account all appropriate hazards – it
is not enough just to try and use the power of your bike.
During our Overtaking Workshops we will explain the dangers, both the obvious and the
not so obvious, the various stages of each and every safe overtake, when it is safe,
when it is not and what the law allows or doesn’t allow.
The day will start off with a short session in the classroom where we will talk about some
of the dos and don’ts of overtaking as well as the techniques involved followed by a
safety briefing for the on-road sessions.
During the on-road sessions you will get the opportunity to practice multiple overtakes
on our own vehicle. Starting off on some straighter wider roads you will progress onto
more countryside locations. By the end of the Workshop you should be much more confident
and much safer when carrying out an overtake – whether on a single or multi-vehicle
overtake.
The ability to overtake other vehicles safely, greatly increase the progress you can make
as well as the width of your smile!
